Where is dative used?

The dative denotes possession and is used with the verb “to be”.

 

What is the difference between accusative and dative prepositions?

If something is in a fixed position we use the dative case.

Example : Ich bin in der Klasse. I am in the class. 

 If the thing is moving around, or it is in action we use the accusative.

I am going into the class. Ich gehe in die Klasse. 

Here are some Dative Verbs: danken (to thank), fehlen (to be missing), geben (to give), gefallen (to like, to be pleasing to, to enjoy), gehören (to belong to), glauben (to believe), helfen (to help), passieren (to happen to), schmecken (to taste), and weh tun (to hurt).
